Asher realised everyone was waiting for her to speak. She swallowed hard.

“So what’s the favour then? What do you need from me?”

Hesta smiled, and though it was full of affection and warmth Asher had the distinct sensation she was falling down a hole.

“I am The Weaver” said Hesta, and her voice thrummed inside Asher’s body. “I weave the threads of all beings, I tell the stories of a thousand years that have passed and a thousand yet to come. Queens are crowned and kingdoms fall, and still I weave the stories of all time, before and after. I am the history of the five universes and I am their future.”

Asher could not look away from Hesta, it was like being mesmerised by the flames of a dancing campfire on a clear, windless night. No other sound intruded on that sacred space, there was only the glow of Hesta and the sound of her voice.

Asher could feel it winding around her body, compelling her to lean closer, to listen harder. Nothing else mattered, only this.

“There has always been a Weaver maintaining the balance, ensuring the gifts of the Crafters are tied to the fortunes of all. There has always been a Weaver, there must always be a Weaver…” Hesta's voice was hypnotic, Asher could feel it pulling, pulling, “I am the Weaver and you are my Heir."

***

For years beyond imagining the Weavers of Andera have maintained the Threads of Existence, passing this responsibility from mother to daughter. Generation after generation each Weaver has woven the balance between the magical and non-magical beings of the Five Universes.

Now the Threads are in jeopardy. Great evil threatens the existence of Andera, of magical beings and the Weaver herself. The last of the Weaver’s line is untrained and unaware, living on Earth.

Asher Blake has spent her life being unremarkable, making music in her head. She knows nothing of Crafters who can create magic from their art, or the Weaver, or of prophecies. Certainly not a prophecy that ties her to the very heart of the Weave. Asher has no desire to be anyone other than an ordinary, forgettable human girl.

But the Weaver needs her heir, and she is not the only one who wants her. When the wrong girl is taken, a reluctant Asher must step forward and become the Crafter she was destined to be.
